Narrowing Your Choices
Using the links below, you will be looking at important people in our history. Think about which person you want to research. You will be reading facts about famous people to help you make your choices. You do not have to read all of the information on each website, but read enough to get an idea of what makes that person important. Think about which person you would like to learn more about.
You will fill-in an organizer (Biography Websites) as you narrow your choices. After you have completed it, write 1st, 2nd, and 3rd next to your top three choices. Hand in your paper to your teacher. He/she will assign to you the one person you will be researching.
If you have extra time, you may watch the video below.

Demonstrate Your Learning
Dear students and families,
During the month of February we are learning about important people in history. Children will learn about ordinary and extraordinary individuals who have contributed to our national character and made a difference in people’s lives. They should begin to understand how the diverse citizens of a nation can share a common history. In this project each student will read about one important person in our nation’s history and explain how that person’s actions have made a difference for our country.
The second grade teachers have developed this take-home project to be completed by each second grade student. The children will read about one famous person that has affected our history, choose a response project to complete, and write a paragraph explaining what the person did and what made their actions so important. Your project will be on ____________________________.
We encourage students and families to work together on this project, however it is important that the final project be reflective of the student’s work. Each student will be sharing his/her project with the class and it will be displayed in the classroom.
On the following pages you will find directions for each step of the project. We hope that students and families show their creativity while completing this project. Please keep in mind that this project should be a representation of the second graders’ hard work. Each student will read their paragraph to the class, so it is important that they practice reading it with someone at home first, as we want them to feel confident when they share their work with the class. Thank you for your help and support with this project.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Teachers

Directions
1. Students will read about the famous person they have been assigned. They can use books from the Valley View library, the Portland Public Library, or access information online using the list of internet resources provided in this packet. When using internet resources, parent support is recommended and may be needed to read more difficult selections.
2. Choose a response project to complete. The directions for each are attached.
a. Paper Plate Puppet
b. Create an Award
3. Write a paragraph about the person. Write at least six sentences(1 topic sentence, 4 details, and 1 closing sentence) that tell who the person is, when the person lived, what he or she did, and why their actions were so important to our nation. Make sure all sentences are complete and include correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling. Every sentence should include relevant and accurate information. Each child should write a rough draft of their paragraph. Please proofread and edit the writing before students write the final, edited paragraph in their neatest handwriting. Remember these paragraphs will also be displayed!
4. Bring the completed project and paragraph back to school by the due date. Each student will then share their work and inform the class about their important person.
